Photoshoot Fresh- Basquiat and Kicks Week

This week I wanted to spotlight a great influence of mine, Jean-Michel Basquiat. One of the more recognized pieces of Basquiat other than the Crown, is the Pez Dispenser painting from 1984 of the Tyranasourous Rex adorned with his crown. This piece has shown up a lot with recent licensing for merchandise at many retailers including the one I’m wearing from a few years ago via Uniqlo.
Something I recently became aware of , while on one of my many library research trips, was this amazing children’s book that pairs Jean-Michel’s drawing including the Pez Despenser as the cover with Maya Angelou’s inspiring poem, Life Doesn’t Frighten Me. This is a great book for all ages (it just recently celebrated 25 years) and the subject matter of conquering one’s fear is very timely now more than ever. It’s also a great gateway to introduce two supremely gifted artists to kids to start to become familiar with and appreciate.
