Trainer Talk Thursday: Women in Sneaker Culture - CayFresh
I wanted to shine a spotlight on some of the amazing women in sneaker culture that I have been able to connect with on Instagram. I started recently following Kicks4Fresh aka CayFresh , the first post was her showcasing the Unc to Chicago Ones which I’m still on a mission to get and it was an instant shoe connection for me with her amazing style and selections! I enjoy her feed which showcases her knowledge, energy & personality through her collection especially via her YouTube series! Here’s a Q&A to get to know her better!
What was the 1st pair of kicks that sparked your interest in sneakers?
The first pair of kicks that sparked my interest in sneakers would have to be the Allen Iverson Reebok Answer 1 OG in the Navy and Gold colorway, which released in 1997. They were a pair of sneakers my dad purchased for me to go with my Emmitt Smith Dallas Cowboys jersey. It was something about this sneaker that gave me confidence and helped me find a sense of belonging during one of the most difficult times during my childhood. I had just moved from a small town to a big city and struggled socially to fit in because I was and still would consider myself to be a Tomboy. This sneaker made me feel comfortable in my own skin and seen, which allowed me to find friends. From that day on, I begged my father for sneakers every chance I could get.
How do sneakers fit into your life and aesthetic? Is it part of your career, weekend looks, etc.?
In my current role, I’m only able to wear sneakers on casual Fridays. However, if there’s ever an opportunity to wear them during a time I know I will be very active, I never hesitate to through 1-2 pairs in my car! Outside of work, I’m always in sneakers...PERIOD!
One of the many reasons I hated “going out” in college was because of the dress code. Why in the world could men wear sneakers but not women?! I attribute it to the sexist constructs we still perpetuate in social media, news, and sports. Weekend and casual looks can still be sexy, fly, feminine (if that’s what you prefer) but I don’t believe that anyone should be placed in a box with unrealistic and demoralizing social constructs. Let’s normalize wearing what makes us feel happy and self-confident.
What are your top 5 kicks and how has that changed over the years?
My top 5 sneakers would have to be Air Max 90, Adidas Samoa, Puma Cali Bold, Air Jordan 1, and Yeezy 350 v2. Below are two short reasons instead of stories as to why they’re my Top 5 [at the moment.]
Air Max 90 – timeless and revolutionary
Adidas Samoa – nostalgic and affordable
Puma Cali Bold – classic and bold
Air Jordan 1 – iconic and versatile
Adidas Yeezy 350 v2 – comfortable and quality
If you had asked me this 10 years ago, the list would’ve been completely different. Today, I choose comfort more often than not, lol. My toes just can’t take the pain anymore!
Do you have a favorite athlete or person for inspiration for looks?
I always used to aspire to look as dope as Missy Elliott because I always saw her as a trendsetter of size but my style has evolved so much that I really don’t have a particular person I look towards for inspiration, and I really don’t care to set trends. The truth is, I’ve purged my entire wardrobe including sneakers at least 3-4 times in my life due to insecurities, depression, and lack of self-confidence but in 2019, I decided that I would no longer continue this cycle and have truly started to embrace who I am and how I present myself. This is the reason why I launched my brand, Fresh Kreationz in October 2020, which I’ll talk about in more detail later below!
What are some grails that you are on a quest for still?
I’m actually on a quest for the Reebok Answer 1’s in the Navy and Gold colorway just like I had back in 1997 for the collection (not for the toe). I have yet to find any in good condition or in that exact same colorway that I feel comfortable purchasing just yet! The sneaker would be a constant reminder that I can present myself however I feel most comfortable and that no one can steal my joy.
Aside from that, I’m not a big fan of purchasing sneakers with astronomical resale value so I spend most of my time scouring the Internet for sales, the Nike Outlet, or waiting patiently for restocks. Like many sneaker collectors (or admirers), my wish list keeps growing and growing as the new releases continue to catch our eyes. It’s a double-edged sword when it comes to deciding which to focus on!
What are issues or things you dislike about women and sneaker culture? How would you change those things?
There is still an apparent stigma and lack of respect for women in the sneaker culture. Even when we’re right in front of brands’ eyes, we do not get the respect we deserve for our unwavering support (because we work hard for our coins) and representation of their brands.
One way that I’m working to change this is by growing my footprint on YouTube. There are only a handful of women solely focused on sneaker content, which is problematic given the fact that there are PLENTY of women in the sneaker culture, and many have had channels but they have not created the buzz in relation to male sneaker content creators due to lack of support or assumed credibility. From there, I’m hopeful that more opportunities locally and nationally will present themselves for others and myself!
What do you see as the future of sneaker culture?
My hope is that the sneaker culture equitably embraces Black and brown women of all shapes, sizes, and styles as part of the narrative instead of focusing solely on “including” them here and there in various lackluster marketing strategies. There are still a lot of barriers to break down and we cannot do this on our own. We are still in need of strong allies, supporters, and brands willing to take a risk by highlighting us, sending us products, or just genuinely appreciating us without there being a “what’s in it for them” type of energy. In plain terms, my hope for the future is to see sneaker culture evolve into a non-gendered space that is accepting of the real ones.
Talk about starting your website and YouTube & how those have developed over the years?
I started my YouTube and Instagram, Kicks4Fresh in November 2019 after a short bout of depression. I needed an outlet to share something I was passionate about and looked forward to finding a community of people that would relate. I was surprised how receptive and supportive absolute strangers were once they seen my videos and Instagram posts. What was more surprising was that the majority of them were men! I just think women didn’t know I existed. So, I spent a significant amount of time on my Instagram specifically seeking out and connecting with Black women sneakerheads! From there, I built genuine friendships and let them naturally uncover that I had a sneaker channel. Early on and to this day today, it’s not about the views but instead the connections and friendships. However, the views, engagement, and recognition will and always will be appreciated! In terms of how both platforms have grown over the years, I’ve taken risks within both that have led me down a path of liberation, creativity, and self-confidence.
As stated earlier, I launched my brand, Fresh Kreationz: Streetwear that builds confidence in October 2020 after almost two decades of pure fear. I always knew I wanted to have my own business and brand but I was unsure of the direction. To introduce my brand and first item, I scheduled a live stream on Instagram. I wanted people to get a clear understanding of my purpose, mission, and story! My first tee, ‘Fresh by Design’ came with a message that could be interpreted in many ways. However, my sole purpose was for potential buyers to know that “no matter how you dress, you are FRESH and uniquely DESIGNED how you were meant to be.” It was received very well! Customers tie-dyed it, tied it on the side, and distressed it to show their unique style, which I LOVED. For my most recent tee, ‘Gorgeous Tomboy,’ I remind the wearer that “just because you like sneakers, sports, and/or video games doesn’t make you less feminine. You’re still gorgeous, sis!” Every product will be accompanied by a personal quote that encourages buyers to be confident in their purchase and how they choose to wear it! You can learn more or purchase either tee at www.freshkreationz.com
How long does it take to set up your storylines for your video shoots and what tips can you give folks who are just starting out?
On my channel, I do sneaker reviews, clothing hauls, and how-to styles! Over time, it’s become easier and less time-consuming to shoot videos for my YouTube but being the perfectionist that I am, I’m always looking for the right angle, thinking of the right things to say, and ensuring that each video is helpful for my viewers. Every video I make with purpose and created with my viewers in mind. I love sneakers, finding the best deals on my favorite brands, and giving people ideas on what to rock with their sneakers. When someone resonates with that or decides to purchase a sneaker based on my information, I know I’ve accomplished my goal.
For those that are just starting out, my best advice would be to have fun, focus on making connections, and engaging with your viewers. I know a lot of people would also say to be consistent, but I would also encourage people to not get wrapped up in what you NEED to drive views, etc. when your channel should be authentic and showcase your love for a particular topic. Over time, your viewers will respect and trust your content for what it is and when it presents itself, regardless of how many videos came before yours!
What can we expect from you and those sites this year?
As far as the channel goes, expect more dope and diverse sneaker reviews, clothing hauls that will highlight my best deals, and unique and diverse how-to-style videos! I also have a live show called Pop the Culture every Monday at 8 p.m. CST where I talk about sneakers, fashion, and pop culture with my KikSquad! In regards to Fresh Kreationz, expect more quality tees and a couple of other surprises!
Anything you want to plug for upcoming things?
I have recently added a section on my website called ‘Fresh Findz’ where you can shop for brand new clothing that I find during many of my clothing haul excursions. I try my best to price all items that will beat your in-store, online and secondary market prices! The site will be updated weekly and items will go fast, so don’t miss your chance to snag some dope pieces from your favorite brands! Who knows, maybe I’ll turn out to be your personal shopper one day!
